A classic Brookmeyer's voicing
Let's take a look at a II-V I un Gmajor harmonized for woodwinds and brass:
The trumpets are voiced in close position and play the upper-structure of the chord, wheras the trombones play "chorale" voicings.
It is a very classical situation where the trombones play the root and guide tones(3 and 7) and the tps play the extensions of the chords.
The sax section is not written with the usual 4 part voicing with the melody doubled an octave lower.
It could be analysed as a 5 part voicing with dropped notes...
But, to achieve this interesting voicing, it is most likely that it results from a regular harmonizing of the 2nd voice in close postion.
The two voices move in contrary motion and similar motion.
