Transcribing Kurt rosenwinkel's lines

Publié par sylvain courtney  - Catégories :  #impro

Transcribing is obviously an important part of lots of jazz musicians' daily practice.

Although I strongly recommend it to my students, i personnally do not remember having ever learnt en entire solo by heart from beginning to end.

I much prefer transcribing little bits in and there and analyse it to see how it works and try to adapt it my way (so to speak).

In this short transcription on "All the things you are", I was attracted by what K.R. played on measure 10 in the Real book (Fm7), so let's have a look!

transcription starts around 0:09

Fm7►F7(secondary dominant)►B7(subV)

Kurt Rosenwinkel's brilliant playing is always a great source of inspiration.

In measure 8, you can notice classic example of enclosure ( targeting a chord tone with neighbour tones).

In measures 8 and 9, the use of the note Eb is really nice as it outlines a Major/minor triad (BM/m) on a Gmaj7.

After hearing the "sound" of the element that i find attractive, it's to time to analyse it so as to apply it in a more personal way.

Possible analysis:

  • Those notes are part of the G major harmonic scale
  • Those notes are part of the G augmented scale
  • The note Eb may just be a passing chromatic note in G major (which evokes the region of the minor subdominant).

I shall then try to experiment with those scales and find lines of my own.

Every analysis is of course just a supposition of what goes through an improviser's mind!
